how to get your free breast pump through insurance

Did you know that U.S. healthcare legislation requires most insurance plans to cover breastfeeding services and supplies, (like the breast pump)?

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is the health insurance reform legislation signed into law that requires health plans to cover preventive services at no cost.  Preventive services that have strong scientific evidence of their health benefits, such as breastfeeding, must be covered and plans can no longer charge a patient a co-payment, co-insurance or deductible for these services.

The Supreme Court upheld the majority of the Affordable Care Act.  Under Preventive Services for Women, provisions require health plans to cover breastfeeding services and supplies without cost-sharing (i.e. no co-payment).

Just a few years ago when I had my first daughter, this was not the case. So during this pregnancy, when my doctor told me I should get my new breast pump, I wasn’t sure how hard it would be or if there was a lot of paperwork involved.

Turns out, it was really easy. There are these awesome and free third-party providers that help you with the whole process, making it super easy to get your free breast pump. All I had to do was send an email for mine:)

Here is what I did:

moms get more breast pump order

Moms Get More: I found out about this through my doctor’s office (who accepts my insurance) but this service does take a lot of carriers. My doctor had a that form that she signed and wrote her phone number and National Provider Identification number on called “Physician’s Written Confirmation Order”. I filled the rest out with my name, address, phone number and insurance information and simply had to snap a pic and email to Moms Get More (or you could fax it). The next day I received an email back that my insurance was verified and which brand pump was covered and would be shipped to me at 30 weeks of pregnancy. There is also a website you can do it at: http://momsgetmore.com/

I’m telling you, it was that easy!

Other services I found but have not used myself:

Pumping Essentials: They have more brands than Moms Get More, but usually only a few are covered by most insurances anyway, (I saw for me the same type was covered or I could pay and upgrade to another one). Medela is on here too! https://pumpingessentials.com/

Yummy Mummy: This is mainly for New York and surrounding states and my insurance plan was not listed on this site: https://yummymummystore.com/ but is popular.

So if you are pregnant, have insurance and need a new breast pump, definitely check this out momma!

This was exactly what I was looking for… I am planning for delivering in india and would be travelling by 22 week. Do you know how early can we apply for? Thanks in advance!

You can apply anytime, they just don’t send it to you until you are 30 weeks is what my understanding is:)

Hi, I received a free pump my Dr set it up at discharge. I received it today but I was under the impression it was going to be a medela at least that is what I was told. I am wondering if I can exchange? Would you know?

      Hi Yahve,

I would contact your insurance company or the hospital if you were given something that states you would get a Medela pump. Otherwise, different insurance companies cover the cost of different pump brands, not only Medela. Congrats on your baby!
