By the time I get off work, get dinner ready, pick up Ayven from school, I have about a 30 minute window to do something with him before it’s time to give him a bath, feed him, and get him ready for bed. Working parents, how often do you get the “I barely get a chance to spend time with my children on the weekdays” feeling or stay-at-home parents, how often do you get the “I am home all day with my children, what else can I do to entertain them yet work around their nap schedules” feeling?
That’s why I love taking advantage of this technology world! Barnes and Nobles has online storytime where the authors of the book or celebrities read the book to your child online. It’s a great activity to do with your child without rushing to make it to a play date or getting them home in time for nap or even dinner. I have personally used it as “reading time” before bedtime and because it’s something interactive, it makes your child feel so much more excited to learn.
It’s pretty awesome! They feature a special book every month and have additional books your child can listen to. The best part is, you can make it fun and interactive with your child so you don’t feel he/she is watching online TV for a long period of time. Here are some quick tips on how to make it into a fun learning experience:
- Check out the site and see what books they have for storytime that month
- Rent the books from the library or purchase the books for your child
- Each month, teach your child to follow along with the reader and ask them a set of questions based on your child’s age. If you keep doing the same book for the month, it’s amazing how much they pick up!
- Use props to make reading more fun. For example, if it’s a book on animals, gather all the figurines/stuffed animals you have around your house and point them out to your child while the story is being read to them. If the book involves fruits, gather all the fruit in your house and show them what the “real” fruit looks like…who knows you may get them excited about eating some healthy items!
Check out the Online Storytime at Barnes and Nobles and take advantage of this awesome free activity to do with your kids in the comfort of your own home!
If you try this with your child, share some activities you did so we can try them with our kids at home 🙂 Happy Reading!!!!
