“Let’s Celebrate Diwali” Book Review
Last Diwali, another mom from my daughter’s preschool class asked me if we wanted to teach our kids’ class about Diwali. She was from South India and my parents are from Gujarat, so when we spoke about our traditions while planning out the activities for the class, some of our customs were similar but others were different. It made me appreciate the diversity within just one holiday and throughout all the regions of India.
When Bharat Babies told us about their new book, I was excited to see that it discussed this diversity.
In the story of Let’s Celebrate Diwali by Anjali Joshi, the main character Harini is excited to share her Diwali story during circle time at school. She quickly learns that she’s not the only one with a story to share! Harini then learns about Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist Diwali traditions through her classmates’ own experiences.
My daughter loves the book at bedtime since circle time is her favorite part of the day so she resonates with the whole plot! It is a great way to teach kids that there is no right or wrong way to celebrate a holiday, and that each family has their own special customs.
Check it out here, just in time for Diwali soon!
