Ahhhhhhh…The New Year!!! It’s a time to reflect, a time to renew. Personally, I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. So this is not going to be the kind of blog post that urges its readers to establish a fitness goal for the New Year. But, this is a few words about exercise.
I know of one true way to get in shape…
It’s simple: sign-up for a race and buy a pair of really cool running shoes.
Why does this work? Well… once you take these two steps, you have no choice but to get in shape. And it kind of fits all types of mommas out there.
The goal-oriented types say, “Now, I have a vision for the New Year. I am going to create a training plan and work-out consistently.”
The penny-pinchers think to themselves, “Oh my gosh! I spent good money on the race and the new shoes. I better get in shape.”
The guilt-ridden mommies reflect, “It will feel shameful to not be able to run, so I better get ready for this race.”
The fashionistas will say, “I can’t wait to look stylish running around town in my bright pink sneakers!”
The competitors shout, “I’m in it to win it! Watch out world, I’m going to win this race!”
My race is the Star Wars Half Marathon in Disneyland on January 18th, 2015. I am really excited for it and even more excited to run it with my husband. Exercising is something that we enjoy doing together and something that we haven’t had as much time to do together in the post-child era. So this will be a fun day for us and I am pumped!
Training has not been easy, especially with a few indulgences over the holidays and a busy working mom schedule. But, the impending date of the run and cool new shoes has given me incentive. I’ve kept my training plan easy. Here’s my recipe: 1 long run each week, as much weight-lifting and cross-training as possible and don’t feel guilty about the days that I can’t make it to the gym. That’s it!
It’s a simple, no gimmicks way to get into the groove of getting into shape for 2015!
So, what’s your race and shoe of choice?
