recipe: mommas, eat oatmeal to increase milk supply!

Listen closely all you ladies who are breastfeeding and pumping. Want to know an easy and tasty way to help you increase your milk supply? Are you ready?

It’s OATMEAL!

Yep.  A bowl of warm, mushy but tasty oatmeal. For me, establishing my milk supply was a challenge. But somehow I pulled through and Jai was from day one on primarily a diet of my milk (supplemented as needed with formula). Along the way, my supply went through some dips and I tried so many different things to increase my production. One of my nurses was the first to tell me about the powers of oatmeal (there is no hard scientific data that backs this but I can tell you first hand that eating oatmeal helped me).  It’s a natural, safe and healthy (high in iron) option to try.  Keep in mind though, if you have gluten sensitivities, you should talk to your doctor before adding oatmeal to your diet.

At first I was hesitant to have oatmeal.  I had never even tried it before, I’m weird with certain textures and just the sight of it disgusted me. But as most mommas out there, I was willing to try anything to produce milk. I remember the night I told my mom I wanted to try oatmeal. The next morning, a bowl of hot gooeyness was waiting on the kitchen table for me. I tried reluctantly but almost instantly converted into an OH MY (this is so delish and I can’t believe that something this tasty will also help me produce more milk…whaaaaat?!!) oatmeal lover.

Here’s my mom’s recipe for the best oatmeal ever. Period.  This recipe includes walnuts for extra protein, raisins for extra iron and also turmeric which is a spice used in Indian cooking which is also an antispetic.  For those of you who need it…hopefully it will help with your milk production. For those of you who don’t need any assistance in that area, make a bowl just because it’s packed with lots of nutrients and not to mention, pretty tasty and comforting…especially now that it’s getting cooler out.

Enjoy!

PS+ If you still aren’t into the idea of chowing down on a bowl of oatmeal, try making some chocolate chip oatmeal cookies instead.  Chocolate always makes everything better, right mommas?!
