make dosa in 3 easy steps with the DosaMaker

We had the pleasure to work with Arvind Krishnan from Soul of India Cooking recently, the inventor of the latest kitchen gadget that the four of us want in our kitchen…the DosaMaker.  You can make dosa in just 3 easy steps.  Yes, you read that right!  If you don’t know what dosa is…then keep reading and if you do, you need to keep reading too.

Dosamaker 1

Dosa is a South Indian specialty (it’s vegan and gluten-free too!) that’s been named as one of the “10 Foods Around the World to Try Before You Die.”  Essentially, it’s the Indian version of the French crepe. Made of a blended mixture of daal (lentil) and rice, a dosa is typically filled with a savory blend of potatoes and spices.  And it’s usually served with a mouth-watering sambhar or soup of vegetables along with a chutneys made of coconut, tomato and/or yogurt.  It’s a dish that almost every Indian you know loves and it’s become popular even with non-Indians.

Dosa is that good.  But for most of us, it’s also that hard to make.  And so it’s usually something that we save for ordering when we go out to an Indian restaurant.  And for those of us who do attempt to make it at home, it just never turns out the same.  With so many variables, it’s hard to get it right.

Enter Arvind Krishnan and the DosaMaker into our lives, our kitchens, making it easy…so incredibly easy to enjoy dosas at home. Arvind is currently using crowdfunding through a KickStarter campaign to launch the DosaMaker and it’s his hope to get everyone’s support to bring the DosaMaker to life.

To be honest, we weren’t sure about it at first.  What could this thing do that a standard crepe make couldn’t do?  And really, how often do we eat dosa in the first place?  But after a demo, the four of us were convinced.  We are impressed.  Not only are the dosas consistent…thin and crispy each time (that’s the way we like them…but you can change the settings to adjust to your thickness preference) but  we learned that the options are endless.  You can do so much more with this Dosa Maker than just the standard dosa. As the site says, “With the DosaMaker, you can use a variety of batters, including fresh homemade batter and pre-packaged mixes, to make dosas. From breakfast to dessert, dosas are a healthy alternative to wraps and sandwich breads.”   And as Arvind told us when we met with him, “We’re really excited to introduce the DosaMaker, because we’re not only making it easier for people to make dosas at home, but also giving people the opportunity to get pretty creative with their dosas. As we’ve shown with the Chai Mommas exclusive recipe (see bottom of this post), we’ve used the DosaMaker to create some unique types of dosas beyond the traditional masala dosa, and we’re really excited to see the varieties of dosas people create when they have the DosaMaker in their home.”

Arvind, we think this is pretty awesome.  We think the DosaMaker is going to make it big time!  And we sure can’t wait to get our hands on one…already thinking of all the brunches and dinner parties! Goodluck – you’ve definitely got the Chai Mommas stamp of approval!

Safety

  • The DosaMaker is designed in the U.S. and will be tested by Intertek, a U.S. OSHA accredited testing organization for safety. The DosaMaker will be ETL listed, which is proof that it has been independently tested and meets the published OSHA safety standard for household cooking appliances.
  • We have partnered with ILAG Swiss high-performance coatings to develop an advanced non-stick cooking surface. Our non-stick cooking surface is 100% PFOA-free and safe.
  • The handles of the DosaMaker stay cool throughout the cooking process, so you can open and close the lid safely.
What makes the DosaMaker different than crepe makers currently on the market?
  • There aren’t any household crepe makers in the market that spread the batter for you. Products such as this crepemaker: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/tibos-electric-crepe-maker/ are only cooking plates that come with tools that you need to use to spread the crepe yourself.  You can’t make a thin dosa with these tools.
  • Our patented closing mechanism assists you in closing the DosaMaker, so you can consistently create evenly spread dosas. Just pour batter, bring the lid forward into the elevated cooking position, and then gently slide back and lower the lid onto the batter.
  • Our software-based temperature controller uses a proprietary algorithm to automatically manage temperature, while precision sensors monitor the cooking surfaces. Just select the temperature (low, medium, or high) for the batter you are using and let the DosaMaker handle the rest. No more cooling your pan with water between dosas, or burning a dosa because the surface is too hot.

Convenience

  • The red light tells you when the DosaMaker is warming-up (which takes about 5 mins) and the green light flashes when it is ready for cooking.
  • We provide a timer (and measuring cup, spatula, and oil spreader) so you can make sure you create a dosa to your desired level of crispness.
  • You can use a variety of batter types, including fresh store-bought batters, pre-packaged mixes, and batters you can quickly prepare at home. The DosaMaker makes authentic traditional Indian dosas and non-traditional dosas, such as the exclusive Chai Mommas Oatmeal Banana Sushi Dosa Recipe.
  • You can easily make thin crispy dosas, or thick, pancake (uttapam) style dosas, by simply adjusting the consistency of the batter.
  • With the DosaMaker you can easily create complete meals. As I showed in our video call, the elevated cooking position is a great way to warm or cook your favorite filling directly on your dosa. Create an egg dosa by cooking an egg directly on top of your dosa, melt cheese for grilled cheese dosa, or warm-up potato masala for a traditional masala dosa.
  •  The DosaMaker is easy-to-clean. Simply wipe the cooking plates with warm water (and if needed add a drop of dish soap).
  • Most of our dosa recipes can be prepared in 10-15 mins and use simple, wholesome ingredients.

Healthier Meals

  • Dosa can be made using a variety of healthy ingredients, including lentils, brown rice, buckwheat, chickpea, and oatmeal. Dosas are a versatile wrap that can be filled with a variety of delicious dishes, or used as a healthy chip to enjoy your favorite chutneys and dips.
  • With the DosaMaker, thin, crispy dosas can be made with very little oil so they are healthier than traditional hand-prepared dosas.

Kids (and adult kids :)) can grab these banana sushi rolls easily, and they’re great to dip into your favorite greek yogurt. 2. Add a light coating of oil to the top cooking plate
  3. While it is warming, make the batter
  4. Blend all ingredients (except for ‘Other ingredients’ list) until you have a smooth batter
  5. With the green light flashing on the DosaMaker, pour 3 oz of batter onto the plate and close
  6. Cook for 2 minutes and open
  7. If you like your dosa crispier, you can cook for additional time but open and check the dosa every 20 seconds to make sure it doesn’t get too crispy
  8. Remove the dosa and let it cool for about 30 seconds
  9. Spread your choice of nut butter or chocolate spread on top of the dosa
  10. Place the whole peeled banana at one end of the dosa and roll
  11. Give the banana a few gentle squeezes to ensure it’s wrapped tightly

  13. Drizzle with honey or maple syrup and garnish with some chia seeds and granola for crunch
